"I WANT TO FILM sex in a church.”

Three women, each in the fringe sex space, have flirted the same film concept to me on separate occasions, a concept that mirrors a vision — not an idea — that I had years ago during my God-encounter in a Filipino restaurant in Queens. This concept is blasphemous! Or is it? I felt a familiar voice stir in my body. “Make Holy Erotica.”

HYPOTHESIS: What if I looped these women together to produce this controversial film. Is this the devil? The divine? Or is it a TRANSMISSION?

Magdalene Remembered is a fearless art-film that took my camera into “blasphemy”. Already, it has struck a nerve on the Big Island where it was produced, igniting conversation on both sides of the patriarchal-matriarchal Sophia-Christ trope, both conservative Christ followers and zealous Magdalene initiates. Authentic holiness is, at first, divisive.

We, the filmmakers, stand proudly in the middle as gap-filler for these necessary conversations, to be pacifying and inclusive regardless of the persecution or praise, and embodying the spirit of aloha, a synonym of Christ-Love. This is what how I learned the distinction of the EROTIC CHRIST, by embodying inclusive-accepting Love. To invite, not divide; to celebrate, not shame; to reconcile all broken parts and be Whole again. Holy. With our Erotica.

It is through these interactions that I learned that my Holy Spirit encounter I had in a Filipino restaurant in Queens can also be articulated as a KUNDALINI AWAKENING, and the vision from that — of feminine eroticism in a cave led by a priestess figure-head — is possibly of an ancient church led by a Magdalene archetype, vivid details apparently characteristic of an “Isis Initiation”, or a “Sophia Code”. I don’t really know. However. Following this thread revealed my own white-washing conditioning as an Asian-American man, my hyper-sexual view of women, and took me Home to the Philippines and my Bible Belt roots. In conclusion, yes, I do believe what we as co-filmmakers have followed a TRANSMISSION. “Make Holy Erotica.”

The Magdalene Remembered LIVE SCREENINGS have been called “the party of the year” mixing EROTICISM, DANCE, MUSIC, and COMMUNITY with INNOCENCE.

LAUREN, a writer and a filmmaker of the erotic, and KELLY, a dancer and also a filmmaker of the erotic, wanted to push their limits. They had no background in Christian ministry like I did. I had no background in the erotic like they did. This can work.

We started with three settings — a church-space, a cave-space, and a baptism space. We each owned our craft; Lauren the poet of word, Kelly the poet of dance and embodiment, and me the poet of image. Lauren directed the set. Kelly directed her dance and erotic embodiment. I directed the edit.

By seeing my women co-filmmakers as MINISTERS OF THE EROTIC, I learned of feminine metaphors that were once blind to me as a Christian man, of the Holy Grail and Womb, of menstrual blood and the blood/wine in the Eucharist, and the Earth as Mother.

Lauren is an Erotic Artist and Writer, certified Tantric Love and Relationship Coach, as well as a sensual activator through hands on healing and Kundalini Bodywork sessions, of over 18 years.
